Are you an athlete who is bored of just running for miles on end? Even if it’s in the beautiful setting of Hilton Head, you might enjoy the scenery better if you could add a bike ride to your workout. Add some swimming and a little competition, and you’ve got the makings of a triathlon. The South Atlantic Bank BEACH BUM Triathlon and Duathlon event is in a perfect setting to enjoy each of those sports with others enamored by Hilton Head’s beauty.
Choices
If you aren’t a strong swimmer, or you just don’t want to get wet, you can choose to nix the water portion of the race. This is called a duathlon (not to be confused with a biathlon, a winter sport that combines cross country skiing and shooting). If you feel especially strong in one area, and have friends strong in the other categories, you can also opt to compete in the group competition rather than the individual.
Details
There are two dates for both the triathlon and the duathlon: June 19, 2021 or July 17, 2021. Both event dates will begin their races at 7:00 am, and the cost for both is $50 for an individual or $75 for a team. The race will begin at Coligny Beach in Hilton Head, where you will find plenty of nearby parking. The format for the race from there is as follows:
Triathlon – 500-meter ocean swim, 6-mile beach bike, 3-mile beach run
Duathlon – 1.5-mile beach Run, 6-mile beach bike, 3-mile beach run
Arrival time is no later than 6:15 am, and there will be a group meeting at 6:45 to go over the course and regulations.
Awards
Once the final racer crosses the finish line, awards will begin. If you are still present, you could collect your award for being one of the top ten finishers in either the under age 39 or over age 40 categories or one of the top five finishers over age 60. Top five teams will also be recognized.
The entire BEACH BUM Triathlon and Duathlon takes place on the beach or in the water, so be prepared for running and riding in the sand. If you are in need of a beach bike, check here!
